Assalaya Sugar Company, Sudan

The state-owned Sudanese Sugar Company is regarded as one of the most successful public sector companies and a vital economic pillar in Sudan. It has an annual capacity to crush 4,320,000 tons of sugarcane and produce 430,000 tons of sugar. The group owns four sugar factories: Assalaya, New Halfa, Guneid, and Sennar Sugar Factory.

USIPL has executed a turnkey 13 MW co-generation plant with civil works and a bagasse handling system for Assalaya Sugar Factory in Assalaya. In addition to this, USIPL also designed, manufactured, supplied, erected, and commissioned a “Pressure Stabilization System” and a “Juice Stabilization System” in all four of the Sudanese Sugar Company's existing sugar factories:

  • Assalaya Sugar Factory, Rabak Town, Capacity: 6,500 TCD

  • New Halfa Sugar Factory, Halfa Town, Capacity: 5,500 TCD

  • Guneid Sugar Factory, Medani Town, Capacity: 5,500 TCD

  • Sennar Sugar Factory, Sennar Town, Capacity: 6,500 TCD

With the commissioning of the “Pressure Stabilization System” and “Juice Stabilization System,” Assalaya Sugar Factory successfully provided steam to operate a 13 MW steam turbine. This additional 13 MW steam turbine was installed without any investment in a new steam generation unit. The power plant layout was made compact to fit within the existing, operational sugar plant without hindrance or work stoppages.

This upgrade across all four sugar factories also resulted in improvements in sugar color and achieved steam savings.

Positive Impact of the Project in the Region

Of the total generation, 6.5 MW of power was exported to the national grid, providing much-needed illumination to nearby cities and towns.
